Innovative Products for Older Adults

Technology should make life easier for people of all demographics.  Here are some products we like for our client population:

1. Innovative Cutlery

Imagine if holding a fork proved so difficult, it was preferable to stop eating altogether?  Millions of older adults are choosing to relinquish meals to avoid the embarrassment of not being able to feed themselves.  Many times this is simply because traditional silverware is too difficult to hold.  Luckily, some savvy engineers have made special cutlery geared towards this population. For those with severe arthritis or contracted hand joints, these utensils have extra girth.  These tools are easy to grab, bend with movement and leave older adults feeling independent and satiated.  If tremors are an issue, this vibrating utensil can help! These utensils detect hand movement and begin to vibrate which can counteract the tremor.

2. Easy Buttons

Who wants Grandpa to forsake wearing his favorite Hawaiian button-up shirt?  No one!  That’s why we love these buttons.  Anyone would grow frustrated if they had to spend their morning attempting to put buttons through holes.  Whether it’s due to poor eyesight, arthritis or lack of dexterity, this product can save time for more important things like playing with grandchildren, going to the movies or taking a stroll.

3. LED Faucet Lights

Loss of cognitive function can force older adults out of their homes. There are products that may help people with dementia to age in place. We like this LED Faucet Light to provide a friendly reminder of which water faucet corresponds to hot and cold. By lighting up cold water with blue LED and lighting up hot water with red LED, this product can help prevent burns from hot water in the kitchen or bathroom. A surprise burst of hot or cold water in the shower may cause a fall.  These blue and red lights provide a visual cue to prevent this risk.

Your loved one may scoff at our current age of technology, but there are products out there intended to improve quality of life for older adults. We at Alliance stay abreast of new technological innovations. If you or your loved one are having problems with remaining independent at home, we can help!  If you have any questions or concerns about evaluating your blood pressure at home, contact us today
