Home Health Nurse vs. Home Care: Which One is Right for You?

At Alliance Homecare, we pride ourselves on our wide range of services that we offer. These services generally fall into two separate categories: home care and home health care or nursing. The responsibilities of the caregiver and nature of the care differs depending on the patient’s situation, and it can get confusing to figure out which type of care you or your loved ones need. In today’s post, we’ll break down these two main forms of care that we provide to those in New York so you can choose the option that is right for you. If you still have questions, feel free to reach out to our caregiving professionals, and we will be happy to assist in any way that we can.

Home Care

The first type of care that we offer is right in our name! Home care is designed to sustain and maintain a patient’s quality of life in the home. This works to keep them safe and comfortable in their own home. The main goals of home care are to decline the effects of chronic illness and aging while improving the quality of life of the patient. We offer home health aide services to any who need it, but it is typically utilized most for those in their senior years and wish to avoid nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Home care professionals will help with daily tasks including:

  • Grooming, bathing, and dressing
  • Mobility throughout the home
  • Reminding the patient to take medication
  • Orienting patients with memory issues
  • Running errands like grocery shopping
  • Preparing meals
  • Assisting with light household chores like cleaning and laundry
  • Companionship so the patient is not lonely

Depending on the level of care needed, we can provide home care for just a few days out of the week, or a more intensive regime of full-time, long-term care as necessary.

Home Nursing or Healthcare

If you or your loved one needs more intensive, medical care, home nursing is often the right choice. This generally is used for those who have faced a serious illness or those who need home nurse care after surgery, and the home health provider will coordinate with doctors to create a plan to help the patient get back on their feet. This type of care is normally not permanent, and is utilized after a hospital stay, once a patient is stable enough to return to the comfort of their own home.

With home healthcare and nursing, the care can include:

  • Skilled nursing
  • At-home physical therapy and exercise
  • Pain management and treatment
  • Home health wound care
  • Prescription and medication management
  • Rehabilitation and recovery care

The nature of the illness or malady will help you to figure out the type of care that you or your loved one needs for home private nursing care. In some cases, you may only need care for a few weeks, but for more serious problems, it could mean months of rehabilitation in the home.
